Oh My
Can you say major scare in the top of the 2nd? I'm fucking amazed Brown didn't blow the game. Good pitching along with some breaks and A-rod's catch saved a pretty bad situation (bases loaded with no outs).
Then the Yankees loaded the bases in the bottom of the 2nd and didn't get anyone home. Ho hum. More updates as the drama unfolds... if I feel like it.
Update 1: Well, Brown got himself out of another bases loaded. At least this time there were 2 outs, but come on. The second bases loaded situation in a game before it's half over is pretty bad. A-rod got a home run, so it's not scoreless anymore. Unless Brown blows it really bad this next inning my dire prediction (I don't even really remember what I said... 4 runs in the first half, I think) was wrong. I'm glad to be wrong sometimes.
Oh, and about the Braves game: I haven't been watching, but Atlanta is up 8 to nothing. Heh. Go Atlanta.
Update 2: Cool, I was wrong. Not to say the rest of the game will go swimmingly, but I'm hopeful. I'd surely like to see more than 1 run on the NYY end of things. Impressive play by Sheffield; he wasn't the only one to make a good play this game, though: Cano (the new 2nd baseman) made a nifty pirouette throw to first near the beginning of the game, and A-rod made the quick catch to save one of the bases loaded near-SNAFUs that I already mentioned. They really are playing well today, thank God. A-rod also almost got hit by a broken bat, a huge chunk of it. Interesting game so far.
Update 3: Poor Sheffield. He messes up his ankle and then gets hit 10 minutes later. He didn't look too happy when he was taking his base; I'm guessing he was disappointed he didn't get to blast a fastball. Womack scored on Matsui's single, and then A-rod's hit yielded a pretty nice play by the A's 3rd baseman Chavez. It was a third to first double play, which is relatively rare to see made (probably because the combination of events to even make it possible is fairly improbable).
As I wrote this, Matsui made a tough catch in center field where the wind was playing with the ball a lot; he changed direction three times before he caught it. Brown looks like he's going to close out this inning with no hits, much less runs... yep, there it is. Struck out the last batter. He's making me believe in him a bit more with this showing.
Heh, Atlanta is up 13-0. Wow. No more needs to be said.
Update 4: Big inning, that 8th. Tino hit a 3 run HR and Posada hit a HR as well to bring the score up to Yankees 6, Athletics 0. Nice. I was disappointed when Jeter didn't get a run in the 7th, but I guess it's ok. Three more outs and it's over. C'mon, shutout!
The Braves game final was 16-0, if you're curious.
It's the top of the 9th as I write this, so I figure I'll just finish it now. A bit of a scare from the 2nd A's batter, don't know who it was; about four feet shy horizontally of a home run, that hit turned into a double. Posada just caught his second fly of the game; that's a relatively rare opportunity. I enjoy seeing catchers get fly balls.
Oh boy. A hit past A-rod put a runner on 3rd and 1st, but with 2 outs there's a good shot this game will end with its present score. The runner on 1st just took 2nd, but big deal, right? Fly ball, game over. 6-0 win, the 900th win by Joe Torre as the Yankees manager, which is cool. Good show, Yankees.
